FAS FAQ: Can a Mother Drink Alcohol During Breastfeeding?
Can a mother drink alcohol during breastfeeding? Anything a mother eats or drinks can cross into the breastmilk. Alcohol can be absorbed into the breastmilk very quickly and can remain there for 4-6 hours. If you’re breastfeeding then the best thing to do is not drink alcohol. If you choose to drink alcohol while you’re breastfeeding, be sure to drink plenty of other non-alcoholic fluids and pump and dump your breastmilk for about 4 hours after your last drink.
